Apple Brown Betty

This Thanksgiving, I wanted to make an Apple Brown Betty, a dessert I hadn't made in years - ok really decades. It's a simple recipe that utilizes old scraps of bread, apples, sugar, and seasonings. It's ideal for the holidays because it only takes seconds to prep, not too long to bake, and tastes great. Apple Brown Betty

An easy to make, classic apple dessert from the 1800s

  • 6 apples (sliced thin)
  • 2 cups bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 lemon (zested)
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  1. Arrange apples on an ovenproof platter.
  2. Mix bread crumbs, butter, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, lemon zest, and cider.
  3. Sprinkle over apples and bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees.
  4. Serve with whipped cream and/or caramel ice cream.
